The state's Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) emphasizes that while the rain has brought temporary relief, it is not enough to fully alleviate the months-long drought. With rainfall deficits exceeding 20 inches in some areas, the recovery process is expected to be lengthy.
The situation is dire, with every county in North Carolina experiencing some level of drought or dry conditions. Two counties are in exceptional drought, 32 in extreme drought, 48 in severe drought, and seven in moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Despite the rain between July 14 and 21, which improved conditions in some parts, reservoirs across the state remain below normal, and streamflow and groundwater levels are also below normal.
The NCDEQ's Klaus Albertin warns that the recent rain has only stabilized reservoirs temporarily. He notes that lawns may appear greener, but summer water usage remains high. The department advises the public to check local water supply systems for any restrictions and encourages water systems in exceptional or extreme drought to follow their Water Shortage Response Plans. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for western North Carolina, with potential crashes and downed trees due to the steady rainfall.
